“Systemic Racism and the Three M’s of Racial Inequality: Implications for Health Disparities”

Increased attention has been given to structural racism as a central mechanism perpetuating health disparities in the United States. In this talk, Dr. Williams builds on this emerging research by proposing a new conceptual model for studying Black-White inequality: The Three M’s (The Making, Manifestation, and Maintenance) of Racial Inequality. Dr. Williams is an Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

October 2025 Grand Round - Maria-Elena De Trinidad Young

“Immigration, Mental Health, and Health Care Access among Latinos in Rural Communities”

Dr. Young is an Assistant Professor of Public Health at the University of California, Merced. In the presentation, she shares key findings from the Policies Influencing Rural Latino Health (PIRLH) Study, a population-based survey examining how U.S.- and foreign-born Latinos experience and navigate immigration policy in rural communities in California and Arizona. She explores the relationship between immigration policy and the well-being of this population and shares lessons learned from conducting research with hard-to-reach populations.
